This paper portrays Italian urbanization trends between the end of the 13th century –when the process was at its highest– and the 14th century, including the period of severe demographic depression caused by the many recurrent epidemics of the plague. It highlights the outstanding differences that existed in urban layout between Northern and Central Italy, on the one hand, and, on the other, the southern part of the Italian Peninsula: differences that were shaped by geographic, economic and political reasons. For the period taken into account the author stresses the crisis of the polycentric model that characterized the economy during the 12th and 13th centuries as well as the leading role played by a few cities (Milan, Venice, Florence, Genoa) that also took advantage of the changes in the political situation between the 14th and the 15th centuries.

The book contains the proceedings of the international conference held in Florence in the spring of 2005. It addresses the subject of the urban and rural revolts of the 14th century, which had recently undergone a period of neglect following the enormous popularity it enjoyed during the 1960s and 70s in the wake of the tormented events of those decades. The sixteen essays comprised in the book, contributed by specialists from five different European countries, develop three different forms of analysis constructed within the timeframe of a broadly-conceived fourteenth century, based on a consolidated and shared chronology, extending from the last decades of the thirteenth up to the early decades of the fifteenth.

For some time historiography has set itself the objective of studying the ways in which European society in the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Age has related to environmental disasters, addressing the perceptions and the reactions, the strategies implemented by the governments, and the repercussions on the religious mentality. In this way it has identified a sphere of investigation that is an authentic multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary workshop, engaging historians of institutions, culture and mentality. At the conference held in San Miniato, Italian and European historians compared notes on this subject, addressing it from different points of view and taking into consideration different environmental contexts (the cities and the rivers, the mountain, the sea, Italy, France, Holland, etc.) and different viewpoints (those of the governments, the lay 'intellectuals', the men of religion, etc.).
